The Galleria, Hatfield, is on a mission to recognise ‘Hatfield Heroes’; individuals who are doing their bit in the community towards a more sustainable future.
This month, The Galleria is showcasing the work of University of Hertfordshire student Jerwin Geo as part of its ‘Hatfield Heroes’ series. Geo studied architecture and urbanism for his Master’s degree and his final thesis focused on the balance between urban development and ecological preservation.
He received an award from Saunders Architecture + Urban Design to recognise the great work he achieved through his thesis.
Tim Stirling, centre director, The Galleria said “As part of our planned journey to becoming a more sustainable destination, we think it is important to recognise other work happening in the community that will support a more sustainable future. Jerwin’s work is really impressive and demonstrates how urban development can be implemented whilst still respecting our ecosystems. We look forward to celebrating the work of our next Hatfield Hero”.
Geo said: “I was thrilled to present my final masterplan. Creating architectural designs that focus on sustainability is a real passion of mine and is a really important consideration for future urban development.”
Individuals such as Geo, provide inspiration along The Galleria’s journey, which will see the centre challenging many more aspects of the way that it is run.
Stirling added: “We’re looking into everything from harvesting rainwater, to how we recycle packaging and waste products, to introducing sustainable planting inside the building and eco initiatives such as bees producing honey on the roof. This is all in addition to the many sustainability measures that our retail partner brands are doing themselves.”
