Plans amended to save popular steel angel sculpture
CBRE Global Investors has been granted planning permission for the redevelopment of the Angel Central shopping centre in Islington as part of its £11m revamp. Under the plans, the shopping centre will undergo a vast redevelopment with greatly improved leisure and retail facilities.
One of the more challenging aspects of the plan involved the relocation of the centre’s iconic 15m stainless steel angel sculpture, designed in 2003 by artists Wolfgang Buttress and Fiona Heron. Following extensive community engagement, the wings will now be relocated to soar 3 metres above the newly designed shopping centre.
Developed by Centros Miller and completed in April 2002, Angel Central extends to approximately 150,000 sq ft, including 75,000 sq ft of leisure accommodation at first floor level. Offering a range of fashion, homeware and technology stores as well as a cinema and leisure facilities, it benefits from an annual footfall of 10 million visitors and has been ranked in the top 10 of London retail destinations.
CBRE advised the landlord and Jon Stoddart, head of the London planning team, said: “Following consultation with the local community and councillors, we are delighted to be able to have agreed the plans for the redevelopment of this shopping centre and the preservation of the iconic angel wings, which will now be elevated proudly above the centre.”
