The Merrion Centre in Leeds reports that its first Lunar New Year celebration, which focused on honouring Chinese culture and traditions, was a resounding success.
The event, supported by the Business Confucius Institute at the University of Leeds, attracted an unprecedented surge in visitors, all eager to experience a colourful array of activities. In addition, guests were able to indulge in the range of authentic Asian venues based at the Merrion Centre including the recently announced Meet Fresh, Blue Pavilion, Sing Kee Chinese Supermarket and authentic casual diner Eatime.
Over the course of last weekend, footfall statistics painted a picture of success, underscoring the Merrion Centre’s ongoing appeal and strong resonance within the local community.
A key highlight was the collaboration with local Chinese Community Schools, including New Vision Education, Leeds Chinese Community School, and York Chinese Society. Their participation included Qi Lin Dances, Zither Performances and energetic Dragon and Lion Dances.
Lynsey Clarke, asset manager for Town Centre Securities PLC (TCS), owner of the Merrion Centre, said: “In recent years the Merrion Centre has seen a surge in International eateries and venues which continue to grow in popularity with our customers. Acknowledging this trend, we recognised the exciting opportunity to celebrate cultural diversity, particularly considering the large number of International students on our doorstep.
“Choosing to celebrate Chinese New Year is an obvious choice, and we are thrilled with the overwhelming success of this first Lunar New Year event in the same year that we prepare to celebrate our own 60th anniversary.”
Bei Gao, chair at Leeds Chinese Community School said: “We were delighted to work with the Merrion Centre for this special event which offered an opportunity to showcase the beauty and diversity of Chinese culture, and look forward to future collaborations and continuing to bring our community together through cultural celebrations at the Merrion Centre.”
Following the great success of the event, the Merrion Centre is inviting customers to join them for a final celebration on Saturday February 24 between 11am-2pm.
