Charter Walk’s Budding Burnley community allotment has been recognised with three prestigious awards at the 2024 RHS North West in Bloom competition. The allotment, which grows a wide variety of seeds, herbs and crops for donation to Down Town Community Grocery, was honoured in the ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood’ category.
This non-competitive award scheme, managed by London in Bloom, recognises local communities making a positive impact in their areas. Thanks to the dedication of Laurence Miles, the head gardener, and his team of Budding Burnley volunteers, the project received a Level 5 ‘Outstanding’ award, the highest accolade in the category.
The volunteers’ commitment to enhancing the local environment through various initiatives, including floral displays, community events and the creation of a Sensory Walkway has earned the project further recognition. It was awarded the Gold Award in the Best Large Commercial/Retail/Industrial Park category and has maintained its ‘Outstanding’ status for an impressive five years running.
Debbie Hernon, centre manager at Charter Walk, said: “We are incredibly proud of the Budding Burnley project and the volunteers who work tirelessly to ensure its success. Not only has it created a vibrant, welcoming space at Charter Walk, but initiatives like the Sensory Walkway are helping bring the community together. Laurence and the team, many of whom have been with us from the start, truly deserve these accolades.”
Debbie added: “All of the crops grown in the allotment are donated to Down Town Community Grocery, where they’re used by customers as part of their weekly shop or to prepare fresh, affordable meals in the café. We are proud to offer a safe, welcoming place for those who need support, whether it’s for food, advice, or simply a friendly chat with our volunteers.”
Through its ongoing success, the Budding Burnley project continues to make a significant difference in the local community, creating both practical benefits and a sense of unity for all who are involved.
