Springboard records shoppers slumps on matchdays
Given the vast array of social and sporting events taking place across the country last week, it is perhaps not surprising that shopper numbers rose against the previous week by +0.3 per cent but declined annually by -1.4 per cent. This is in response to the annual rise of +0.5 per cent and weekly uplift of +2.8 per cent for the same week in 2017. What is most interesting is to view the performance by day, where it is easy to see the impact of the football and other events on footfall, with the drops coming clearly for every location type to bring an overall Springboard Index drop of on Sunday 1st July (-5.4 per cent) and Saturday 7th (-7.9 per cent) against last year.
Outside of these two days, retail park numbers increased every day, to finish +1.1 per cent year on year (the same as this week in 2017) but fell -1.3 per cent against the previous week. Shopping centre performance was the reverse, with an overall annual decline of -3.8 per cent but a weekly increase of +0.7 per cent. Shopping centre footfall suffered throughout the week with slight dips each day with just Thursday bringing an increase of +0.3 per cent. High street numbers fell in between, with an annual drop of -1.3 per cent but a weekly rise of +0.8 per cent – by day, high streets increased on 4 of the 7 days with the largest drops on Sunday and Saturday.
